Reading Charles Dickens’\u00a0Great Expectations\u00a0<\/em>for a second time has been a profound revelation. I first encountered this novel many eons ago during my secondary school days. Back then, I failed miserably to appreciate its depth; I read it as a flat piece of narrative set in a distant, dusty historical society that I could not relate to at all. Having now returned to it after almost thirty years, I found myself deeply moved by its enduring themes of loyalty, love and compassion thriving amidst the harsh divides of wealth and social standing.<\/p>\n

What struck me most this second time round was how masterfully Dickens brought out his characters’ emotions, particularly those of the protagonist, Pip. Dickens’ rich language completely brought Pip’s inner world to life, making it incredibly easy to empathise with him throughout his journey in life. It was almost as if I was watching Pip grow up, seeing him harbour grand dreams of escaping his humble background for a better life as an apprentice under a wealthy benefactor. Yet, this ambition forced him to leave his sister and loved ones behind, which he did without much regret at first. The heavy sense of betrayal he felt struck me hard as I had to read about the painful battles between his thoughts and his actions throughout this journey.<\/p>\n

Though it was written in the nineteenth century, the novel mirrors reality in a way that feels surprisingly modern. It captures the universal human need to stand out, stand tall, and succeed out there due to societal demands. The story does not shy away from depicting the ugly side of society when the rich and powerful interact with the poor. Despite these social cruelties, the book proves that genuine love still stands true and strong in the end to win over one’s heart, and that love is what matters most at the end of the day. Love and sincerity. Just what I need at this point in my life too.<\/p>\n

The emotional climax of the book broke my heart badly. I felt a deep ache for Pip when, finally prepared to leave behind some luxuries in life, he returned home to his childhood sweetheart only to find her engaged to his closest relative – one whom he had taken for granted most of his life. The realization that it was too late for him to do anything about a lost love, was devasting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0Great Expectations\u00a0<\/em>is a story about love and compassion that often gets lost when one becomes preoccupied with the daily shenanigans. We are all like that aren’t we? We all get lost very early on in life, chasing after things that don’t really matter, only to regret some of these decisions later in life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reading this book is like going on a timeless journey of the soul, all thanks to Charles Dickens and his rich language and imagination. This book was a gift from my primary school friend. though I can’t recall why she gave it to me. I do also have other (very thick) books written by Charles Dickens in my cupboard, all of which were prizes for topping my class back when I was in primary school (more than thirty years ago). I’m going to digest them one by one, soon!<\/p>\n
