{"id":724,"date":"2010-04-03T16:43:45","date_gmt":"2010-04-03T08:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/?p=724"},"modified":"2015-10-13T22:14:51","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T14:14:51","slug":"fried-nian-gao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/?p=724","title":{"rendered":"The Way Overdue Fried Nian Gao"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-731\" title=\"Fried Nian Gao\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Fried-Nian-Gao-1024x685.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Fried-Nian-Gao-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Fried-Nian-Gao-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was a dish meant for the celebration of the Chinese New Year, but due to work commitments, I never had a chance to get down to preparing it until now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is a traditional Chinese &#8216;sandwich&#8217; of sorts, with bread as per the Western sandwiches, but with a different filling that melts in the mouth, thus allowing it to stand out among its variants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Egg: 2, lightly beaten<\/li>\n<li>Self-raising flour: 110g<\/li>\n<li>Baking powder: 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Water: 100ml<\/li>\n<li>Sesame oil: 2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Pepper: to taste<\/li>\n<li>Freshly baked bread: 8 slices<\/li>\n<li>Nian Gao: 1 small cake, sliced into 8 pieces<\/li>\n<li>Toothpicks: About 30 pieces<\/li>\n<li>Oil: enough for deep frying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Method<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Heat oil for deep frying.<\/li>\n<li>Mix egg, flour and baking powder together.<\/li>\n<li>Pour in water. Add sesame oil and pepper. Mix well.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fold each slice of bread over 1 slice of nian gao so that it becomes halved. Secure the sides with toothpicks.<\/li>\n<li>Dip sandwich into batter and deep fry till golden brown (about 5min).<\/li>\n<li>Dap with paper serviettes to remove oil.<\/li>\n<li>Remove toothpicks before serving.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Tricks<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Use double acting baking powder to ensure that the batter rises.<\/li>\n<li>Use a frying wok instead of a commercial deep fryer to prevent the batter from sticking to the sides of the dipping pan.<\/li>\n<li>Use sweet potatoes to substitute the bread for an authentic Teochew dish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Serving<\/em><\/strong>:<br \/>\n4 persons<\/p>\n<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 5px 5px 0;float:left;height:40px;\"><script src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/peepor.net\/pint\/blog\/?p=724\" send=\"true\" layout=\"button_count\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"true\" font=\"verdana\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a dish meant for the celebration of the Chinese New Year, but due to work commitments, I never had a chance to get down to preparing it until now.
