The name of this pastry is enough to catch my attention – ‘Pigs in a blanket‘? Where’s the pig? Why would pigs need blankets unless they sleep in air-conditioned rooms? And why plural for ‘pigs‘ and singular for ‘blankets‘? Do pigs know how to share?

After much research, I began to learn more about this pastry. So, the ‘pigs‘ come from the pork sausages that make up the key content of this pastry, while ‘blankets‘ suggests the way that the sausages are being wrapped up – snugly and all warm (from the oven). The last bit sounds very sadistic, I know.

Well, in any case, I personally find this a very flexible and interesting dish to have at a party. It makes for a very convenient finger food and can help to generate some interesting conversations. There are many ways to personalise your own ‘pigs in a blanket’ too: (1) using your favourite sausages (chorizo, wiener, cocktail, brockwurst etc); (2) adding your own topping on top of the roll (sesame seeds, herbs, poppy seeds, black pepper etc); (3) rolling the pastry your way (in a triangle or rectangle). You can also eat it plain or with dips like tomato sauce.

It’s a whole lot of fun to make it, and a lot more enjoyable to taste it!

Ingredients:

Puff pastry: 375g, thawed

Cocktail Vienna sausage: 40 pieces

Egg: 1, beaten

White sesame seeds: 2 tbsp

Herbed salt: 2 tbsp

Method:

Preheat oven at 220 degrees Celsius.

Roll out puff pastry till about 3mm thick.

Slice pastry sheet into 2 triangles and from there, smaller triangles about 10cm long and as wide as the length of the mini sausages at their widest end (between 35 to 40 slices).

Place 1 mini sausage at the widest end of the triangular pastry sheet.
