Orange Mochi With Funny Faces

This mochi recipe was something I did out of pure fun. I had a packet of glutinous rice flour in the cupboard that I wanted to try to use up, so this recipe seemed the most straightforward and without the need to get too much of anything else. I had a pen of edible ink as well, so, why not do something crazy? Might as well.

I invited the hub and the boy to draw funny faces. Can’t recall who drew what, but it was all fun and we got to choose which one to gobble up too.

My emotions this week at work? It’s got to be that one right at the center of the tray. I am hoping this weekend can be those two right at the top.

Ingredients:

  • Glutinous rice flour: 1 cup
  • Caster sugar: 1/4 cup
  • Water: 1 1/4 cups, room temperature
  • Salt: 1/4 tsp
  • Orange extract: 1 tsp
  • Yellow colouring: 1/4 tsp
  • Corn starch: 1/2 cup + extra for coating hands
  • Edible black ink: 1 pen

Method:

  1. Combine glutinous rice flour, sugar, water, salt, orange extract and yellow colouring. Stir till no lumps remain.
  2. Microwave on high for 2min. Remove and stir.
  3. Microwave on high again for 2min.
  4. Sprinkle corn starch onto a working board. Scrape dough onto corn starch.
  5. Coat hands with corn starch. Flatten dough and cut into 12 pieces.
  6. Pinch together edges to form balls. Place onto small paper cups.
  7. Brush away extra flour. Use edible marker ink to decorate as desired.

Serving:
12 mochi balls
